GeographyDominica (pronounced Dom-in-eek-a) sits midway along the Eastern Caribbean archipelago, just a few miles from French neighboring islands of Martinique to the south and Guadeloupe to the north. Its location is 15degrees North latitude and 61 degrees west longitude.The island's official name is the Commonwealth of Dominica, which is mostly referenced in official communique and to distinguish the island from its northerly Caribbean sister, the Dominican Republic. The indigenous Carib Indians named the island Waitukubuli which means "tall is her body" in the Carib language. Dominica is home to the last Carib population in the Caribbean. With an area of 298 square miles (751 sq km), it is the fourth largest island in the English speaking Caribbean. It has a population of just over 70,000 (2000 census) peopled mainly of African descent, with an increasing white and Chinese population. A significant portion of the population lives in and round the capital city, Roseau. There's the second of Portsmouth in the north end of the island, with a population of about 5 000 people. About one thousand of these are students and staff (most Americans) of Ross University School of Medicine offshore school. HistoryDominica was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 but most of its early colonial history was spent changing hands between the French and the English. The island eventually escaped colonial fangs on November 3rd 1978, when it gained independence. Its embryonic independence era brought increased challenges, none the least was the complication of its political struggles. By the mid-1980s though, Dominica had settled down as a stable and peaceful country. It is also a member of the United Nations, Organisation of American States (OAS), the Caribbean Community and a number of other regional and international organisations.Political SystemDominica is a democratic country which has enjoyed universal adult sufferage since the 1950's. It follows the Westminster model of Government. The Head of State is a President who is elected by Parliament and holds office for a term of five years. The current Prime Minister is the Honorable Roosevelt Skerrit who was selected following the death in office of Prime Minister Pierre Charles; and the President is His Excellency Mr. Vernon Shaw who was elected in 1999.Judicial SystemDominica enjoys an independent judiciary with its highest court being the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London. At the lowest rung of the judiciary is the Magistrate Court which deals with minor civil and criminal matters. Dominica shares a Court of Appeal with other members of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. Appeals from the Eastern Caribbean Court of Appeal go to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.Dominica has an English common law legal system and most of its statute law is based on United Kingdom precedents. Telecommunication SystemDominica has one of the most modern telecommunication systems in the Caribbean, and holds the record in the Guiness Book of World Records as being the first country in the world to establish a fully digital system. Cable & Wireless (Dominica) Ltd. and Marpin Telecoms and Broadcasting Ltd the telecommunications providers are willing to facilitate the establishment of business, be they internet gaming, data processing operations or otherwise.
